A repeated checklist can help you notice and record concerns that a rushed glance might miss. But that only works if the checklist comes from documents that actually apply to the kart in front of you: the manufacturer's manual, the components you've fitted, the event's rules. A generic list you found once and keep reusing for every kart won't cover what's different this time.

This article shows you how to build that checklist, use it consistently, and record what you find. It won't hand you a finished inspection with the values already filled in — torque figures, tire pressures, wear limits, and cable adjustments belong in current manufacturer documentation for your exact kart and components. Write the source's title or version next to every value you copy from it.

Along the way, a stop condition means one of two things: a finding that the applicable manual or rule says prevents the kart from running, or a concern you're not authorized to diagnose or fix yourself. Either one moves the item out of "run" and into the withhold column, until someone with the right documentation or authority resolves it.

Three possible decisions

Every checklist row ends in one of three states. Deciding which one applies is the point of the inspection — the checking is just how you get there.

  • Run. The checks that apply to this item are complete, and no stop condition has been identified. This is not proof or a guarantee that the kart is safe, roadworthy, eligible, reliable, or compliant — it means only that, as far as this inspection went, nothing stopped it.
  • Correct before running. The finding has a fix that current documentation authorizes you to make yourself. You make the fix, then repeat the affected check before moving on.
  • Withhold and escalate. A stop condition applies, or you're genuinely unsure, or the fix would require work you're not authorized to do. The kart doesn't run until the relevant authorized person or authority resolves it.

Keep those three labels in front of you as you work through the checklist below. When a row doesn't clearly qualify as "run," it defaults to withholding — never to a guess.

The pre-session checklist

Each system below uses the same four fields, and it's worth filling all four even when the answer feels obvious:

  • Source instruction — what the current document for this kart and component tells you to check.
  • Model-specific limit or method — the value or procedure from current manufacturer documentation for your exact kart and components, with its title or version noted alongside.
  • Observed finding — what you actually see, measure, or test.
  • Decision — Run, Correct before running, or Withhold and escalate.

Work through the steps in order, so each documented check gets an entry rather than being skipped.

1. Identify the kart and its rules

Before you inspect anything, write down the kart, chassis, engine or electric powertrain, and the components fitted today. Then note the session, event, and class you're preparing for.

Confirm the current applicable documents from the manufacturer, venue, organizer, event, class, and governing authority before you copy a single value into the sheet. That list matters because no single document covers everything. The manufacturer's manual won't tell you what the venue or organizer requires, or the event, class, and governing authority. None of those other documents will give you the manufacturer's own component limits. You need the full set, whichever ones happen to apply here.

Decision: if any applicable document is missing or out of date, that step becomes a withhold-and-escalate item — you can't check something against a document you don't have.

2. Inspect the brakes

  • Source instruction: the brake checks specified in your kart's current documentation.
  • Model-specific limit or method: the wear limit, fluid spec, or test procedure from that manual, with its title or version noted.
  • Observed finding: what you find when you check it.
  • Decision: Run only if the check is complete and none of the above applies. Withhold and escalate if the brakes are defective or you're not sure — don't make that call on the grid yourself.

3. Check steering and driver controls

  • Source instruction: the steering, pedal, throttle, and cable checks your manual specifies.
  • Model-specific limit or method: the play, tension, or mounting spec from that manual.
  • Observed finding: what you find.
  • Decision: Run, correct, or withhold, following the same rule as above. Leave the adjustment procedure to the manual — don't improvise one because it seems close enough.

4. Check wheels and tires

  • Source instruction: wheel mounting, rim condition, tire condition, and pressure checks specified for this kart.
  • Model-specific limit or method: the mounting torque, pressure, and damage limits from the current document.
  • Observed finding: what you find.
  • Decision: apply the same three labels, using the current document for this kart to decide how to treat a damaged rim or a tire outside its limits.

5. Check the drivetrain

  • Source instruction: chain, belt, motor, gearbox, or attachment checks documented for this configuration.
  • Model-specific limit or method: tension, alignment, or attachment spec from the applicable manual.
  • Observed finding: what you find.
  • Decision: Run, correct, or withhold. A combustion kart's chain and an electric kart's gearbox mounting are different checks against different documents — don't apply one kart's spec to the other.

6. Follow the fuel or electric branch

This is where combustion and electric karts diverge.

Combustion branch: record the fuel-system checks your manual specifies. Note the observed finding and decision as before.

Electric branch: record the operator-level checks your manual specifies for the battery, cabling, connectors, and any status display. Note the observed finding. If the manual restricts certain work — battery service, for instance — to trained personnel, that work stays off your own to-do list regardless of how confident you feel. If the manual names a fault state as a stop-and-contact condition, follow that instruction rather than troubleshooting it yourself.

  • Decision: Run, correct only within what you're authorized to do, or withhold and escalate for anything outside that authorization or covered by a stop condition.

7. Check bodywork and attachments

  • Source instruction: fairing, bodywork, and attachment checks specified for this kart and event.
  • Model-specific limit or method: the security and condition requirements from the applicable document.
  • Observed finding: what you find.
  • Decision: missing, broken, or damaged parts are treated the way the applicable manual or event rules say to treat them — don't wave through a loose fairing because the rest of the kart looks fine.

8. Review and decide

Go back over every row. Anything without a completed check gets finished or explicitly withheld — an unfilled field isn't a pass by default. Anything corrected gets its check repeated before you move on. Anything unresolved or outside your authority goes to the relevant authorized person or authority, and the kart doesn't run until that's settled.

When every row reads "run," that means no stop condition turned up during this inspection — not that the kart is certified, compliant, or guaranteed to perform as expected.

Record and hand off a finding

Writing findings down matters more than it feels like it should, especially once more than one person touches the kart during a session. This format is one way to do it — adapt it to whatever record-keeping you already use:

The "source document and version" field is doing real work here. If a check was made against last season's manual, that's worth knowing the next time someone reviews the record. And the "recheck result" field closes the loop on any correction — a fix that was never rechecked is functionally an unverified fix.

How documents become checklist rows

Two short examples show how this works in practice: one for a combustion kart, one for an electric one. Neither invents an observation — you fill in the actual finding on the day.

CRG combustion-kart example

For CRG racing karts, the CRG manual gives you headings you can lift almost directly into checklist rows.

  • Source instruction: the CRG manual's walk-around groups into:
    • brakes — pad wear and system leaks
    • steering and pedals — play, pedal operation, and the two-bolt steering-wheel mounting
    • wheels and tires — mounting, wear, and pressure per the tire manufacturer's instructions
    • drivetrain — chain tension and lubrication
    • bodywork — spoiler and fairing security
  • Model-specific limit or method: the wear, pressure, tension, and mounting values from the CRG manual's current version.
  • Observed finding: yours to record on the day.
  • Decision: if the brake system is defective or doubtful, the CRG manual's own instruction is not to start the kart — withhold and escalate, regardless of how the rest of the sheet reads. The manual is equally direct about broken or missing parts and worn or damaged tires: don't take the kart on track with either, and replace a damaged rim before running it. Fuel-spillage prevention and a throttle cable that isn't too tight are separate CRG cautions worth carrying into this kart's fuel and control rows.

ROTAX E20 electric-kart example

The ROTAX E20 operator's manual sets out a driver walk-around before use.

  • Source instruction: the ROTAX E20 walk-around groups into:
    • battery — visible condition and secure attachment
    • cabling — correctly fitted cables and dry connectors
    • powertrain — secure motor and gearbox attachment
    • display — working display and RDL LEDs
    • brakes — function check before each use
  • Model-specific limit or method: the specific checks and conditions in the ROTAX E20 manual's current version.
  • Observed finding: yours to record on the day.
  • Decision: brake-fluid loss puts the ROTAX E20 out of operation immediately, and any defective or worn part found in the walk-around requires authorized replacement before the kart runs. Battery maintenance or exchange belongs to trained ROTAX personnel only — that boundary holds regardless of how confident you feel about it yourself. If the display shows an ISOLATION ERROR, the manual's instruction is to stop and contact ROTAX before restarting, not to reset and try again. For the chassis itself, consult the supplied SODIKART Sigma documentation directly rather than guessing at what it says.

What an external check can—and cannot—establish

Two outside sources are worth understanding in their own terms: Motorsport UK's scrutineering rules define the scope of an external check, and FIA Karting's V4 guidance defines the status of its own recommendations. Neither substitutes for the checklist above.

Motorsport UK scrutiny

In competitions and associated practice governed by these rules — the Motorsport UK 2026 Edition 4 rules — the competitor remains responsible for establishing that the vehicle conforms to the event regulations. Pre-event scrutiny checks compliance only as far as conditions on the day allow, and it looks at class or category eligibility fairly superficially rather than exhaustively. Passing it is a limited spot check — it doesn't shift responsibility onto the scrutineers, and it doesn't guarantee full compliance. Under these same rules, an accident or any modification made after scrutiny means the kart has to go back to scrutineers for another look.

None of that is a criticism of scrutineering — it isn't designed to replace an owner's own documented inspection, and it doesn't extend to authorities or events outside Motorsport UK's 2026 rules.

FIA private-testing guidance

FIA Karting's V4 guidelines cover private or collective non-competitive testing, and they're worth reading as background if that's the kind of session you're preparing for. But they're explicitly non-regulatory guidance: the document itself notes it may be updated, may not suit every regional or national setting as written, and does not replace national legislation or sporting regulations that apply where you're testing. It's a reference to adapt locally — your venue's or authority's own requirements still apply.
