The pre-session inspection asks one question: is the kart safe to go out? The post-session inspection asks a different one — what did that run just do to it? — and the best time to answer it is now, in the few minutes after you come in, while the marks are fresh and the kart is still warm. A witness mark from light contact, a seal that only weeps under heat, a fastener that just backed off, a flat-spotted tyre: all of them are obvious right after the run and easy to miss a week later, when you're staring at a cold kart trying to remember whether that scuff was always there.

Be clear about what this pass is and isn't. It's a damage-and-wear check, not a safety certificate. Finding nothing wrong now doesn't mean the kart is cleared to run — the next time it goes out, you still start with a pre-session inspection. What the post-session pass does is catch problems early, while they're cheap and while you can still remember what happened, so you fix them calmly at home instead of discovering them in the pre-session rush or, worse, out on track.

Let it cool, then look

A kart that's just run has hot brakes, a hot exhaust, a hot engine, and a hot chain. Support it on a stand with the engine or power system off, and do the parts that are already safe to touch first — the bodywork, the tyres, the fasteners — then come back for the brakes, exhaust, and engine as they cool. Careful attention near a hot part is fine; grabbing it is not.

Heat is also information. A bearing or brake that's noticeably hotter than its neighbours, a smell of clutch or coolant, a seal weeping only while warm — these show up now and vanish once everything cools, so a slow look while the kart is warm tells you things a cold inspection can't.

Look for what the run just did

Pre-session and post-session inspections cover many of the same systems, so the point isn't to repeat that checklist — it's to look with a different question in mind. You're reading the kart for evidence of what just happened:

  • Impact and contact. Fresh scrapes, witness marks, or bent bodywork from kerbs or another kart — and what's behind them. A scuffed sidepod can be cosmetic; a scuffed sidepod over a bent mount is not.
  • New cracks. Around the seat struts and stays, bearing hangers, brackets, and any welds — anywhere the frame works hardest.
  • Leaks under heat. Fuel, oil, coolant, or brake fluid that appears while the kart is hot, around seals, lines, fittings, and the master cylinder.
  • Fasteners that moved. Vibration backs hardware off; a nut that's walked out or a witness mark that no longer lines up is worth catching before the next run.
  • Wear that stepped forward. A chain that's thrown its lube and needs adjusting, a tyre that's picked up or flat-spotted, a brake pad that's noticeably thinner.

The walk-around, front to back

Work in a fixed order so nothing gets skipped. This is a quick pass — a few minutes — not a strip-down.

Read the wear, not just the damage

Damage is what changed suddenly; wear is what changed a little. Both belong in the post-session pass, because the wear items are the ones that strand you when you're not watching them. Note the state of the chain and sprockets, the tyres, the brake pads, and the engine's consumables, and record the running that produced it — fuel used, and engine hours or runs. Those numbers are what make a maintenance schedule mean anything: an interval you can't measure against is just a guess.

A tyre's wear pattern also carries a setup story — where it's scrubbing, how evenly it's working — but reading that is a setup question, not a maintenance one. Here, just record what you see; interpret it when you're working on the setup.

After a crash, kerb strike, or off

A hard impact turns the routine pass into something more thorough. The frame is structural, so after any real contact, don't settle for the quick look — do a full chassis crack inspection and check the kart still sits straight before it runs again. And treat anything safety-critical as gating the next run, not deferred to a convenient interval: a brake that's now doubtful, steering that's picked up play, a crack you're not sure about. A manufacturer manual will typically tell you, plainly, not to run with a brake defect or doubt, and that holds regardless of how keen you are to get back out. If you can't judge a finding yourself, keep the kart off track and ask a competent mechanic or scrutineer.

Write it down, then hand it to the next run

The post-session pass is only worth doing if what you find outlives your memory of the session. Keep two things apart when you record it, because they get used differently:

  1. Ordinary wear and running — hours, fuel, and the condition of the parts you expect to consume. This is the context your maintenance intervals are measured against.
  2. Anything abnormal — play, a vibration, an unfamiliar noise, a leak, or visible damage — recorded separately so it's easy to find later, along with whether it needs fixing before the next run or just watching.
