So instead of a list, use a method: five separate questions, asked in order, about the item and the event together.
- Is the item required for this event? Some items are compulsory only in certain categories or venues; others aren't mentioned at all.
- Does the current rule accept the item's standard? Standards get superseded. An older standard that used to qualify may no longer be accepted.
- Is the exact approval or homologation label on this item valid for that use? Here, homologation refers to approval against a named standard; the event rules still decide whether that approval is accepted for this use. A label can be genuine and still not be the one this event wants.
- Does the provision cover this event, this class, and this driver's category? Rules may distinguish driver categories or venue types rather than applying uniformly, so check that the specific provision covers the recorded driver and event before relying on it. If a class regulation defers category-specific equipment provisions to an appendix that's missing or hasn't been checked, record that gap under this test — tests 2 and 3 are about the named standard and label themselves, not about whether a category-specific appendix exists.
- Does the item meet the fit, fastening, condition, and inspection requirements that apply? A correctly labelled item that's loose, damaged, or wrongly adjusted still fails.
If you can answer all five with confidence from documents you've actually checked, you have a supported answer. If any one of them stays uncertain, the honest outcome is "confirmation required" — not a guess dressed up as approval.

There's no shortcut here: a clean label doesn't prove acceptance on its own, and the broader requirement doesn't automatically cover this category.

Swap in your own item, event, and document — what matters is naming exactly what you checked and asking which provision controls, not asserting one yourself.
Find the controlling documents
Once you know what to check, the next question is where to check it. Work through documents in this order:
- the current rules from the relevant governing body or organiser for that season;
- the specific event or class regulations, which can add or narrow requirements;
- any amendments or bulletins issued since those rules were published;
- an applicable official technical list, if the rules point you to one.
One more caution: a technical or homologation list only tells you which products are built to a given standard — it's not the event rule that decides whether your event actually requires or accepts that standard.
The FIA publishes an index that identifies Technical Lists 87 and 108, among others, and gives the official route to reach them. That index is useful as an official route to the technical list. It is not evidence that a particular product appears on either list, and it doesn't establish that any given event currently requires or accepts the standards those lists cover. If your event's rules mention a technical list, check the event rules separately for what they actually require.
What the 2026 Motorsport UK rules illustrate
The clearest way to show why these five tests stay separate is with a real set of rules, so long as its limits stay visible. Everything in this section applies under the cited Motorsport UK 2026 rules and within the identified event or category scope — it is not a general karting requirement, and none of it should be read onto another country, another governing body, or another season.
Helmet labels and standards
Under those rules, a helmet used in the karting activity covered by Chapter 18 Appendix 7 needs an ASN Approval Sticker — a sticker applied by the national sporting authority to confirm the helmet has been checked against its process.
