The apex is the point where the racing line comes closest to the inside edge of a corner. It is not a fixed feature of the track — it is a choice the driver makes, and moving it is one of the main ways a line is adjusted.

Three descriptions are useful:

  • Early apex: the closest point arrives in the first part of the corner. It can help position the kart for a following turn, but may leave less room at the exit.
  • Geometric apex: the closest point is near the middle of a simple, constant-radius corner. It is a useful drawing reference, not a guaranteed fastest line.
  • Late apex: the closest point is further around the corner. It often trades some entry speed for more room to rotate and unwind the steering on exit.

The correct choice depends on the corner shape, grip, kart, traffic, and what follows. A late apex is often helpful before an important straight; an earlier apex may be deliberate when preparing for the next direction change.

“Missing the apex” means passing wider than the intended closest point. That can be a driving error, but not every wide line is wrong: avoiding contact, staying off a poor surface, or setting up the next corner may justify it.

The useful diagnostic is the exit. If you repeatedly run out of track, need an extra steering correction, or must lift after committing to acceleration, test a lower entry speed or later turn-in. If the kart reaches the inside too late and leaves unused track everywhere, you may be over-slowing or delaying the turn too much.
