A racing line is the path and sequence of inputs that gets a kart through a corner efficiently. It balances distance, minimum speed, rotation, stability, and the speed you can carry into whatever comes next.

That means there is no permanent line painted onto the circuit. The useful line can change with the kart, available grip, traffic, weather, and the next corner.

Out, in, out

The familiar starting point is:

  1. Approach from the outside of the track.
  2. Turn toward an apex near the inside.
  3. Let the kart open its steering and use the available track on exit.

Using more track can reduce how tightly the kart must turn, but “widest possible” is not automatically fastest. Extra distance, surface grip, kerbs, overtaking risk, and the next corner all matter. Treat out-in-out as a baseline to test, not a rule to follow blindly.

Entry, apex, and exit

Think of a corner in three connected parts:

  • Entry: finish the important braking while the kart is stable and arrive at turn-in at a speed you can repeat.
  • Apex: choose where the kart comes closest to the inside. An earlier apex may help one direction change; a later one can leave more room to unwind steering on exit.
  • Exit: open the steering as the kart accelerates, while keeping enough margin to stay within track limits.

If you repeatedly need a correction, lift, or extra steering near the exit, the problem often began before the apex. Try a slightly lower entry speed or later turn-in before blaming the kart.

Corners are connected

The line that produces the highest speed in one isolated corner may be slow over the next three. In a sequence, position the kart for the direction change that follows. Before a long straight, a clean exit often deserves more priority because an exit-speed difference continues after the corner.

That is a priority, not a universal command. A shorter path or stronger entry may still win in a flat corner, a short run to the next turn, or a racing situation where another kart controls the available line.

A practical way to find the line

On an unfamiliar circuit:

  1. Use the venue map, briefing, and permitted observation time to understand the direction of travel, pit entry and exit, and hazards.
  2. Drive the first laps below your limit and find a safe, repeatable path.
  3. Choose fixed reference points for braking and turn-in.
  4. Change one corner at a time. Start with a corner that leads onto a meaningful straight or begins an important sequence.
  5. Compare consistency as well as the best lap. A line you can repeat gives you better evidence than one exceptional lap. If you have timing, reading lap and sector data shows which corner is actually costing you time.
