Entry is your approach to the corner — the last stretch of track before anything changes. Turn-in is the visible point where you start turning the kart toward the corner; it's a reference you can mark in your head against a cone, a curb edge, or a painted line. The apex, sometimes called the closest-inside point, is where your line comes nearest to the inside edge of the track. It's worth separating this from the geometric apex, which is just the midpoint of an idealized, symmetrical arc through the corner — a useful mental picture rather than a target you must hit exactly. Exit is where and in what direction you leave the corner, and it matters as much as anything else here because it sets up whatever comes next.

That "whatever comes next" is the real hinge. A corner rarely stands alone. When one corner's exit determines your options in the next one, instructors call it a linked corner — your position and speed leaving the first corner constrain what's possible in the second. So the useful question isn't "how do I take this corner well" in isolation. It's: what does this corner feed into, and what does that place demand of my exit?

One thing the table doesn't spell out on its own: treat a temporary restriction — cones, repair work, a closed section — the same way you'd treat the corner's permanent shape when you're comparing candidates. Classic candidate

Start here if you're facing an uncomplicated corner and you don't yet have a strong reason to prefer something else. It gives you a repeatable baseline, and a baseline is what lets you change one reference at a time later and notice the difference.

It does have limits. Because it treats the corner mostly on its own terms, it can leave you poorly placed for a linked corner or a following straight where exit position matters more than a tidy-looking arc through the middle. The dated car-school material this candidate draws from carries a specific warning: reaching the apex too soon in a corner that tightens toward the exit may leave you short of road when you need it. So this candidate fits badly on a tightening corner, or if you find yourself repeatedly running close to the edge on exit. Watch the available exit room every time you try it. That's the real test — how it feels going in tells you less.

Later-apex priority

This candidate delays the apex, holding a wider position longer before turning toward the inside. In the car-derived model it comes from, this is worth trying before a long straight, or before the decisive corner of a linked sequence, because it keeps exit placement — and therefore your speed onto whatever's next — as the priority.

"Long" is deliberately relative here — the article doesn't set a distance. Compare it against the other straights at this venue, and ask a comparative question instead: is this straight long enough that the extra exit speed a patient apex buys you has room to build before the next braking zone, more than it costs you through the middle of this corner? If yes, the later-apex candidate is worth trying; if the straight is short, that trade may not pay off before you're braking again.

The tradeoff, in that same model, is a more patient entry and possibly less corner speed through the middle of the turn than the classic line gives you — the car-derived caveat from the intro applies here too.

It fits poorly if you treat "later" as an instruction to delay indefinitely — at some point you still have to get to the inside. It also fits poorly if the corner's shape or your local instruction points elsewhere, or if you catch yourself treating the tradeoffs above as a tested kart result rather than a car-derived idea you're checking.

A simple bend

Picture a broad, uncomplicated bend leading into a short neutral stretch, in a controlled session with no other karts on track. The classic candidate is easy to set up here: an entry marker, an apex, an intended exit. A later-apex attempt would mean a more patient entry and a separately chosen exit reference, held a beat longer before turning in.

The useful preparation is arranging clear references for each point during the briefing or a track walk, before the session starts. Afterward, the thing worth checking isn't which route felt more exciting — it's whether the kart reached the intended exit with usable margin, and whether you can repeat it. That's the whole test. The later candidate stays something to compare against — don't assume it's better just because it sounds more advanced.

A straight or sequence

Now picture two different corners: one opens onto a long straight, the other is the first half of a two-corner sequence. For the corner before the straight, a later-apex hypothesis makes sense to try — that model gives exit placement more weight when a straight follows.

For the sequence, the more useful first step is identifying the entry you want into the final, decisive corner, then working backward to arrange the earlier corner's route around that target. Mechanically repeating the classic pattern through the first corner, without reference to the second, can leave the kart in a position that doesn't set up the sequence as intended. Both of these remain hypotheses to test in kart practice.

Opening and tightening curves

Last, imagine two curves side by side: one that opens up after the apex, one that tightens toward its exit. In the opening curve, an earlier apex is worth trying, with the exit room you have left afterward as the thing to watch. In the tightening curve, the more useful comparison is a later, more patient apex, because the car-school material specifically warns that an early apex on a tightening corner can run out of road before the exit.

The classic sketch is a handy way to name what changed between the two curves. The later-apex idea is a handy way to keep your attention on exit placement in the curve that punishes an early move. Corner shape decides what you need to watch — it doesn't rank the options for you.

Use this after you've picked a corner to think through, and fill it in before or during a controlled session rather than trying to hold it all in your head.

  7. One thing to check: Name a single visible reference or outcome to watch in your next appropriate controlled session — for example, whether you reach your intended exit with margin. If a local instruction restricts what you can test directly — a cordoned area, a no-overtaking zone — choose an observation you can make without going near it, such as exit position rather than grip at the restricted spot. A qualified local coach can help you interpret the corner if one is available; using this card doesn't require one.

One card, filled in

Here's a wholly hypothetical example, built for an invented corner at an invented circuit, to show how the fields fit together. None of the references, instructions, or conditions below are real — treat every one as a placeholder standing in for your own corner.

Notice what the venue-instructions field and the one-thing-to-check field do together: the card doesn't try to test grip at the restricted spot, because the briefing already ruled it out — it tests something it can actually observe instead.

Before you act on this card, remember what it can't grant you. The venue or track operator, the organiser running the session, and the applicable governing authority all control what's allowed on track, and none of them are replaced by a card you filled out yourself.

Track use comes first

Everything above is planning. It answers "what would I like to try," not "what am I allowed to do right now." Those are different questions, and mixing them up is where a reasonable-looking line sketch turns into a problem.

Line-selection reasoning for a supervised closed-circuit session doesn't grant you the right to occupy a particular part of the track, to hold a position against another driver, or to pass. It's a planning tool for solo laps and controlled practice. Current venue instructions, the organiser's briefing for that specific session, and the applicable governing authority sit above anything in this article, and they can change what's sensible or permitted under the applicable session or competition rules at a given corner on a given day. Where interpreting the corner itself is the sticking point, a qualified local coach is a useful person to ask — but that's an optional help, not a substitute for checking the rules that apply.

The UK examples

One concrete illustration, scoped deliberately: under Motorsport UK's 2026 National Competition Rules, Edition 4, a vehicle alone on track may use the full width of the circuit; separate provisions govern traffic duties and limits on defensive changes of direction.
